FELICIA CHANG
she/her
I am a documentary photographer living and working on the traditional and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (Vancouver, Canada). My work comprises commissioned family narratives, commercial and non-profit projects, and editorial stories. My current projects include exploring women’s experiences around perinatal loss and their grief journey, documenting the chosen single parenthood of a Jewish woman in her mid-40s, and a series about immigrant identity of folks who call Chinatown home. On the personal side, I use photography to understand my personal history, relationship with my daughters, their sisterhood, and our individual and collective identity.
I am a member of Diversify Photo and Women Photograph and a volunteer to several grassroots organizations that serve Chinese Seniors living in the Downtown Eastside community within the city of Vancouver. As an immigrant to Canada, I am motivated to find ways to amplify the social (justice) work that supports this aging population of Chinese immigrants, many of whom are low-income, face housing challenges and/or food security, and have language barriers.
As a photographer, I recognize this extraordinary privilege of being able to listen, observe, and tell people’s stories, or the opportunity to empower them to tell their own. Being in the presence of other people’s experiences has informed me both in life and photography, and I am always in deep gratitude for the transformation in perspectives it gives me.
